The 7D2D Wipe Guide

This comprehensive guide explains how Salty Zombies wipes their 7 Days To Die servers using the Ptero Game Panel and Takaro Server Manager. Wiping the servers can be a big ordeal, mainly because there are many different aspects. It's easy to forget things or make mistakes.

Hopefully, this guide will help you with that. In writing it, we have found that doing each step in this particular order saves time and reduces the possibility of errors.

What You Need:

  • Familiar with File Pathing
  • Access to Takaro
  • Access to Ptero Gamepanel
  • The location of serveradmin.xml, serverconfig.xml and prefab.xml

Pre wipe

We add some events and features before the wipe, like purge and enabling free imports of player bases so they can practice doing it. Below are the times you should enable these features via the Takaro and instructions on how to do it.

Free Base Imports

1 week before the wipe

Disable the Import/Export module in Takaro and Enable the Free Import/Export Module in Takaro

Purge

2 days before the wipe

Enable the Purge module in Takaro, then go to serverconfig.xml and set the LCB size to 1 and killing mode to 3

Turn Servers Off

1 day before the wipe

Turn servers off around 24 hours before the scheduled wipe so you can start preparing the map.

Navigating To Servers In Takaro

You should be familiar with our 7 Days To Die Server Manager, Takaro. When you log in, you will see the main dashboard with all the server stats. From here, click on the Game Servers tab on the left to view all the servers to which Takaro is currently connected.

Enable/Disable Modules In Takaro

Many of our servers' features are divided into modules. This makes it easier to add and remove modules or even apply them to other servers. When in the server section, click the "Modules" tab on the left to view all the modules currently installed on that server.

You can enable or disable them, but by clicking on the 3-line icon in each module's top right corner, a little drop-down menu will appear with the enable or disable option.

Purge config Settings

Once you enabled the Purge module, you need to go to the serverconfig.xml and change LandClaimSize size to 1 and and PlayerKillingMode value needs to be set to 3 (Kill Everyone).

Step 1 - Reinstall The Server

Finding Wipe Variable
Updating Wipe Variable

Setting Wipe Date In Takaro

When a player subscribes to our 7D2D store, they get access to the /donor command. Takaro sets this to expire in 60 days since that's our usual wipe schedule. But what if a player subscribed halfway through the wipe? They will want to do the /donor command on the fresh wipe.

This next part lets Takaro see if the servers have been wiped since the player last did the /donor command. It will allow the /donor command to go through if it has. If it hasn't, it will tell the player they have already used this command this wipe. This will also ensure players save teleports, etc, and do not save/move to the next map.

To set the wipe date, go to Takaro and click the Variables tab. In the search box, type "Wipe". The wipe date variables will appear with the servers' names next to them. Click edit under the Actions column and change the date to the date we will open the new wipe servers.

Step 1 - Reinstall The Server

Before starting each wipe, we reinstall the 7D2D servers on Ptero. This is especially important whenever the game gets an update, no matter how small. It's just good practice. Over the years, it has reduced issues, bugs, corruption, etc.

Reinstalling the 7D2D server will reset the admin.xml. This file contains all the people who have been banned from our servers and the admin's permission levels; it also contains the donor permission levels with access to Livemap. Open this file, press "Ctrl + A" to select all the contents of that file, and then press "Ctrl + C" to copy everything to your computer's clipboard.

You can do the same for server.xml. But if the game has been updated since the last wipe, check that the structure of these files has not been changed.

Reinstalling 7D2D Server on Ptero

To reinstall the 7D2D servers, go to "Settings" in the Ptero game panel. At the bottom right, you will see the Reinstall Server panel. Click the "Reinstall Server" button, confirm, and wait for the process to complete.

Pro Tip: Windows Clipboard

Whenever you copy something, like a text or image, by right-clicking it and selecting "copy" or use "Ctrl + C" to copy it, as mentioned above. That gets saved to a "Clipboard", which can hold about 20 items you have copied. So you can open up multiple files and Ctrl + A (Select All) the contents inside and then Ctrl + C to copy the text without fear that copying the contents of one file will override the other.

Hold down "Windows + V" to open your Windows Clipboard.

Step 1 - Generate the Map

Before we start generating the map, R20 made a mod that magically adds the DC Prefabs to your Prefab.xml file. This means that when you generate the map, the DC Prefabs will not only be generated with the map but also flush with the ground level.

Make sure you download this mod, which is Pinned in the 7D2D staff chat and install it on your local computer in the mods folder. Your mods folder should be located along this path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\7 Days To Die\Mods

Local Map File Generated Name

Once you have R20's mod installed, boot up 7D2D, go to Editing Tools, then Random World Previewer, and generate the map like this for the best results. For FPS, we like to keep water to a minimum and the land flat to make vehicle travel easier.

Once you have generated a map you are happy with, click on New Game at the bottom right of the screen. This will load you into a new single-player game using this map.

Check on DC

Since it's single-player, you will have admin powers. So go to your console by pressing F1 and type in "DM" (Debug Mode), then press ESC, and you will see a new button called "Open POI Teleporter". Teleport to the different Donor Cities and fly around them, check the loaded in ok and are flush with the ground. Do the same for the Donor Trader.

Step 2 - Uploading The Map

Finding the new map on your computer

Now that you have checked, Donor City and Donor Trader are all good. You can close out the game and upload the map to the Ptero Game Panel. The map will be saved on your local computer along this file path: C:\Users\Info\AppData\Roaming\7DaysToDie\GeneratedWorlds

Where Generated World Maps Are Stored Locally

Rename and compress the map file

Rename the file before uploading it to the wipe date. For example, you could name it "7th February PVE Map" or "7th March PVP Map". This way, it won't get confused with the other maps that have been uploaded.

Then compress the map folder into a zip file so it can be uploaded easily.

Zipping Up The Map File

Upload the map to Ptero

On the Ptero Gamepanel, Go to the Files Tab, then to Data, and then to the Worlds folder. Hit the blue upload button at the top right and select your recently zipped map folder. (you can also drag and drop the zip file as well)

Then, once it has been uploaded, you can click on the 3 dots icon on the right side of the file and select"unarchive". Now you have the map you generated on your local computer onto our dedicated server.

Step 3 - Adding Back The Settings

In the serverconfig xml is where most of the settings for the server are stored. The servers have general settings that are the same for all of them and server specifc settings. When doing so many servers its easy to make mistakes so please double check each one matches the right server and then do one last final check.

Reminder: that now is a good time to make sure you have changed the Purge config settings back to normal.

Step 4 - Setting Reset Regions

Go to Saves/ResetRegions/regions.txt and delete everything in that file since it will have the old maps reset regions in it. Then start the server and go to the live map to set the new reset regions.

CPM Live map, which should be the Games IP and port +7. So, for example, if the IP and port of the server you wish to view the CPM live map on is 192.169.88.58:29600, then go to your web browser and copy/paste that IP/Port and add +7 to the port number and hit enter. So, it should look like 192.169.88.58:29607.

Open CPM Live Map Filters

You should see a screen like this, with a prompt at the top left asking you to log in with your Steam Account. The permissions of what you can see on the CPM live map are tied to your SteamID. So make sure you admin powers on the admin.xml file.

Once logged, check the image and do step 1 by clicking on "select regions" and then Step 2 opening up the drop-down menu of filters.

Toggle These Filters On

Several items will already be checked in the drop-down menu, but you want to add "Quest POI," which appears blue on the map when you check it. Then, add "POI," which is Yellow, and "Regions," which brings up the grid and shows the regions' layout.

Selecting the regions covered in POIs can be tricky since you click on the POI instead of choosing the region. So, most of the team tends to uncheck the yellow POI filter and use the blue "Quest POI" filter instead to select the regions.

I switch between having the Yellow POI filter on and off because sometimes a region might look empty with only a few quests POI. But if you add back the Yellow POI filter, you can see in this example that there were a lot more POIs in that region, so it is worth adding it to the reset list.

Why Toggle Between The POI Filters

Pro Tip: You can't unselect a region

You can't unselect a region once you have clicked on it. Mistakes like this are typical. You can continue adding it as a reset region and then delete it from the reset region file later. I usually refresh the page and start again, which is generally quicker.

Saving The Reset Regions You Selected

Saving your Reset Regions

  • Step 1: After carefully selecting all the regions you want to reset. Click on "Claims" in the top left corner.
  • Step 2: A popup will appear. Click "Create", and you will see another popup with the complete list of regions you have selected.
  • Step 3: Scroll to the bottom of that popup and Click "Ok".
  • Step 4: Then click on "Ok" on the first popup. Use the image here for reference.

Step 5 - Reveal Map

To reveal the CPM Map, go to the F1 console, type Visitmap Full and hit enter. This will simulate a player walking along your entire map, slowly revealing it one chunk at a time, which can take some time. Some people prefer to do this before adding the reset regions as they think it's easier to see the map and where to add the regions they wish to reset. But I will leave that as a personal choice.

Step 6 - Setting up DT and DC Waypoints

Setting up Donor Trader Waypoint

Use the POI Teleport to teleport to Donor Trader and fly to the Donor Trader area, where you want the players to teleport into and type this in-game chat command: /setwp trader and /setwp traders. This will set the teleport for donors so they teleport to where you were standing when they type in chat /trader or /traders.

Setting Up The DC Waypoints

Now that the map is uploaded to the server put a password on the server via the serverconfig.xml and load it into it. Ensure you have admin powers via the admin.xml so you can go into Debug Mode because you need to use the POI Teleporter again and teleport to the Donor Cities.

Teleport to each DC via the POI teleporter but don't move a muscle once you have been teleported there.

IMPORTANT: DON'T MOVE AT ALL ONCE YOU ARE TELEPORTED. NOT ONE PIXEL.

If you did move, teleport yourself there again and then use these chat commands on the appropriate Donor Cities. For example, if you teleport to Donor City A, you will use chat command /newdc A, then teleport to Donor City B and use chat command /newdc B, and so on. This will automatically add the

Creating a No Zombie and a Donors only claim around the Donor Trader.

Now, we will create some claims about the donor trader. One is a no-zombies claim that despawns zombies, and the other kicks out non-donors in the Donor Trader. To do this, go to the Donor Trader on the map, stand/hover over a few blocks away from the corner, type the command in console ccc p1, then fly over to the other corner and type ccc p2 nozombiesDT -1 hostilefree. Repeat the process for the Donors Only Claim by flying in 1 corner and typing ccc p1, then fly to the opposite corner again and type ccc p2 donorsonlytraders -1

The last few commands you can do anywhere on the map, and they are:

/nobmtraders - A command that detects where all the traders are and will set them to kick people out of them on horde nights if we have the trader's 24/7 feature on.

/nolcbtraders - A command that detects where all the traders are and automatically sets a "No LCB claim" 200 blocks around them.

Step 6B - Manual Waypoint Backup

The /newdc A and /newdc B command are new, something that was made as this guide was made. One of the main benefits of making guides like this is you can visually see the process and step needed which makes it easier to identify ways in which you can simplyfi or automate that process. But sometimes automations fail. So below I am writing the manual way of setting the DC Waypoints just in case.

Finding DC POI file and coordinates

Go to the prefabs.xml file which is located in Data/Worlds/<map name>/prefabs.xml

Search for the Donor City Prefabs by clicking somewhere in the file and then pressing Ctrl + F to bring up search function and type DC-A for example. If you don't click somewhere in the file and press Ctrl + F you get a different search function that only searches whats currenty on screen, not the full contence of the file.

You should see a line like this in the Prefab.xml: <decoration type="model" name="DC-A" position="-1178,47,322" rotation="0" />

Take the coordinates of the Donor City Prefab, which in this example of DC-A is -1178,47,322. Then, in the game, type "NewDC A -1178,47,322" as a chat command. Do the same for all DC POIs

Step 6 - Moving Files Over

Moving the Saves Folder over

Once you have completed all the above, go to the Ptero game panel, go to saves, click on it, and select archive. This will zip up the save file so you can download it. Then, upload it to the same path area on the other servers. Once you have uploaded it, right-click on it and select "Unarchive".

Step 7 - Exporting prefabs Player bases

R20 has created a list of blocks that should not be imported when a player does a base import, and there is a way to apply this list to all import files automatically. First, you need to download R20's blockupdates.csv file and add it to your own local 7 Days To Die file by dragging and dropping into:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\7 Days To Die\Data\Config

I will prompt you to replace the already existing vanilla blockupdates.csv file. Click yes to proceed.

Then go to Ptero and find the players' exported base files in: /Container/LocalPrefabs/. You should see a folder called "Playerbases".

Archive this Player Bases folder, download it and then add it to your own local prefabs folder: C:\Users\Info\AppData\Roaming\7DaysToDie\LocalPrefabs

Once this is done, open the game to the main menu, then press F1 to bring the console up and copy/paste these commands:

prefabupdater loadtable

prefabupdater updateblocks

You should see: Updating xxx blocks mapping took xxxms Replaced a total of xxx entries.

This is how we removed all the blocks we don't allow players to import, like farmplots etc. Zip the player base folder again and upload it to the newly wiped server in the same place you downloaded it: /Container/LocalPrefabs/

Step 8 - Final Steps

Check the server config

Are the Loot and XP settings correct for the server, Causal, Pro, and Nightmare?

Is the Purge settings reset back to normal?

settime to 7000 if needed (settime 7000)
